MASQUERADE ULTRA DELUXE 2017-10-22T19:37:39+00:00

Anime NYC loves cosplay! Whether you pulled a Team Instinct cap from your closet or spent months making your Yuri!!! On Ice free skate costume perfect, we want to shine a spotlight on you!

Saturday night at Anime NYC, cosplay takes over our Main Stage with our Masquerade ULTRA DELUXE! A new type of Masquerade started at Crunchyroll Expo, the Masquerade ULTRA DELUXE combines a traditional anime convention costume contest together with Japanese game show elements – allowing both cosplayers as well as general fans to participate!

You can take part in our Masquerade ULTRA DELUXE as a cosplayer or simply come as a fan – either way you’ve got a shot at competing on stage for fame, honor, and glory!

Full details on participation are below!

The Anime NYC Masquerade ULTRA DELUXE will take place on Saturday, November 18 at 8 PM on our Main Stage. ALL MASQUERADE ENTRANTS MUST PRE-REGISTER. THERE IS NO ONSITE REGISTRATION.

Costumes spanning the worlds of anime, manga, video games, musicals, books, and even comics and movies are all eligible for entry (original characters, too), but please note costumes must comply with Anime NYC’s Cosplay and Weapons Policies.

There are two ways to compete…

  • WALK ON – If competing as a Walk On, contestants will go on stage individually (or together if part of a group), exhibit two to three poses as our emcee reads the entrant’s costume description, and then exit.
  • PERFORMANCE – If competing with a Performance, contestants will go on stage, perform their skit, and then exit.

The competition is split into four categories:

  • Beginner – Anyone who has never won a major costume contest award.
  • Intermediate – Anyone who has won between one and three major awards.
  • Advanced – Anyone who has won four or more major awards.
  • Kids – Anyone 10 and under may participate in a Kids Costume Parade at the beginning of the event.

You are welcome to compete at a higher level should you want to do so. Professional costumers may only compete at the Advanced level. If entering as a group, your category is determined by the most experienced member of your group.

Best Craftsmanship, Best Portrayal, and Best Performance will be awarded for each of the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced categories – as well as personal Judges’ Awards and an overall Best In Show. Kids will all receive a certificate of participation.

Any costume is eligible to compete on stage, but only costumes that are at least 75% created by hand are eligible for Craftsmanship awards – with Craftsmanship judging taking place prior to the Masquerade. If you are taking part in Craftsmanship judging, you will be given a time to check in, up to eight hours before the contest begins, during which time our judges will meet with you to review your costume.

All participants (except Kids) will be required to attend a mandatory rehearsal the morning of the competition where you will run through the entirety of your routine for the evening show. (Full costumes are not needed for the rehearsal.)

All participants must be 11 years old or older to participate in the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced categories of the Masquerade. Kids 10 and under may participate in the Masquerade during a Kids Costume Parade at the beginning of the event.

When on stage, please keep the following guidelines in mind for time. We will be strictly enforcing this.

  • Walk-On – 30 seconds
  • Performance (1-2 people) – Up to 90 seconds
  • Performance (3-5 people) – Up to 2 minutes and 30 seconds
  • Performance (6+ people) – Up to 3 minutes

All music/backing tracks for performances must be submitted digitally in MP3 format and in advance. No music for performances will be accepted the day of the show. You will receive additional information on submitting your music/backing tracks when you receive your acceptance email.

When planning your time on stage, please keep in mind that there will be children in the audience. Please keep your costume and/or performance equivalent to a PG-13-rated film. No explicit sexual references, gestures, or swearing will be allowed. Any presentation that violates this rule will be disqualified and may be asked to leave the stage during their performance. Usage of any foul or abusive language is grounds for instant disqualification and removal from the Masquerade.

All Masquerade participants must be Anime NYC attendees, and badges will be checked before competing.

Here are some other things to keep in mind!

  1. Don’t jump off the stage. Audience are also not allowed to run up to the stage for any reason.
  2. No projectiles to be thrown off stage. Don’t throw anything from the stage.
  3. There is no adult-related content allowed on stage. Keep all performances respectful and appropriate for general audiences.
  4. All props, setups, and scenery must be taken down after your performance. Do not leave any items behind that can hinder the contestants after you. Don’t make a mess.

The Masquerade is a time-honored convention tradition, but we know things can be made even more exciting for both the cosplayers participating and the audience with the addition of ULTRA DELUXE Challenges! First done at Crunchyroll Expo, the ULTRA DELUXE element adds a whole new dimension (and a whole bunch of more prizes) to the event!

After all our Masquerade entries have performed, a series of ULTRA DELUXE Challenges will be presented by special judges. These challenges will celebrate what it means to be a fan of anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture, and players will be selected from both the Masquerade’s participants and the audience – with prizes awarded for each!

No cosplay is needed for any of the ULTRA DELUXE Challenges, and you don’t have to pre-register for them! All you have to do is show up!

The ULTRA DELUXE Challenges are separate from the Masquerade with their own prizes. So if you’re already competing, think of this as a bonus round to potentially win MORE prizes! Entering these challenges is entirely optional, so if you want to stick to only your walk-on or performance, that’s definitely OK!

What kind of challenges are we talking about? Part of the fun is the surprise, but some examples include:

  1. Popular Anime Trivia
  2. Re-enacting Classic Anime Tropes
  3. Mario Kart
  4. Karaoke
  5. Jenga
  6. Charades
  7. Giant Jenga
  8. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  9. Blind-Folded Giant Jenga
  10. The Aggro Crag
