Ever since he was little, Takashi Natsume has been able to see what others could not, namely monstrous spirits known as Yokai. Natsume’s grandmother would challenge Yokai to contests and the ones that lost had to sign a contract with her, binding their names to her “Yujin-cho (friend list)”. Ever since Natsume has inherited the book, together with Nyanko Sensei, his self-proclaimed bodyguard, he spends his days trying to return the names within the book to their owners. The culmination of the anime is this theatrical film with an new story under the supervision of the original author!

ISAO TAKAHATA RETROSPECTIVE
Presented at Japan Society (333 E 47th St). Tickets are $14 and available now. In remembrance of Isao Takahata, a key figure in the history of Japanese animation and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Japan Society and Japan Foundation present a commemorative screening of the director’s penultimate animated feature. Derived from a popular newspaper cartoon strip about an average middle-class Japanese family, Yamadas mines the comedy and unexpected profundity of life’s everyday moments. Introduction by Dr. Kathryn Hemmann, Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies at George Mason University. This screening is organized in tandem with Japan Foundation’s “Remembering Isao Takahata” panel at Anime NYC (Saturday – Panel Room 4 – 2:15 PM).
